The feds probably have all kinds of informants on the streets. This rumour spread out really fast, so all the lowlifes heard it immediately. The feds spend a lot of money on these RICO-cases, so they probably buy info from low-level hoods. This is just my take on this, I'm not a mob-expert or anything...

and if everyone else in the NJ crew heard it, Curto must have too. There is the link from the boys to the Feds. Also, anything involving Tony S probably gets out on the street quick and the Feds probably have more informants on the street that aren't shown in the show.
