Check out this tidbit about the final scene from Edie Falco:

….• An unremarked feature of that final scene in the diner: "I forgot to put on Carmela's rings," says Falco, who had a bad cold that day. "Ten years on that show, and I have never not put those rings on. I was sure this was going to come up on some website. I'm surprised I didn't hear from somebody that it had some significance that I was not aware of."

Here's the YouTube video of the last scene:

So, i reviewed the last scene, and it clearly shows Tony wearing his wedding ring. (look at 5:20 minutes into clip- shows Tony’s left hand just when the onion rings are placed next to his wedding band!). I can't see Carm's wedding ring on her left ring finger at all- but if anyone can check this out with better resolution- please chime in! As i said in other thread, seems to me that Chase would have made Edie get the rings if he intended them to be in the shot.

Meanwhile, while Meadow is trying to park her car, we see there is No ring on Meadow’s right hand, where in some cultures, her engagement ring should be. (clearly displayed while she was shifting her car, as the cameras held onto it just a touch too long to be of minor note).

And finally- as Meadow rushes towards her rendezvous with the family- her left hand very briefly shows a shiny ring on her left hand wedding finger! (see 5:34 minutes into the clip- its really brief, may need to do frame-by-frame). i guess some people do wear their engagement ring on their left hand, but either way, it’s interesting….

I do think this is interesting, if not story related.

I can't see that it would have any relevance to the show, especially as falco stated that she forgot to put them on.

As much as Chase spots just about everything, I imagine filming that last scene, there were so many things that had to be perfect, that he wasn't checking to see if one of the stars had got dressed properly.

Also, just to note, I'm not sure how you guys do it in America, but over here people wear their engagement rings on their left hand ring finger, and the wedding ring tends to sit just in front of it after marriage.

Often, some places make wedding rings that tessellate perfectly with the engagement ring.

well, i must say that there is no way, imo, could i agree with you that Chase or his head wardrobe staff would not take note of such a critical wardrobe issue, even though Edie acknowledges she forgot the rings. The show is famous for its meticulous attention to detail on wardrobe clothing, hair, etc.

As i have said before, i think Chase must have decided to just go with it, upon learning that Edie had forgotten the props; perhaps to go with the flow and not take her out of character. Maybe she subconciously left them behind, knowing that her character might have done the same thing in anticipation of that possibly being the last time they would be together as on-stage husband and wife.

i think that the lack of presence of the very symbol of Carm's lifelong bond to her husband, after the whole show took such a hard look at the choices she made for years to persist in that marriage, with all its ups and downs, really is significant. And kind of ironic, given that there was all this emphasis on the golden onion rings! It might have been just a sort of cinematic comedic pun. A bit of a jab at the sanctity of their marriage vows-- or just a poke at the reality that we're all human, no marriage is perfect...

Or maybe its just that Edie had taken a benadryl for her bad cold and was really out of it!

I have been thinking about why Meadow might be wearing the ring or rings and Carmella not.

It could be a projection of what will occur in the future.

If Carmella was killed that night at Holsten's along with Tony and AJ then perhaps Meadow will take her mother's ring as a memento.

I think in some cultures daughters who lose their mothers before they are married take a wedding or engagement ring before the burial.

I don't know if this is Chase's intent or just coincidence. Clearly Carmella is still alive as the scene unfolds but there was something surreal about that scene especially the way we see Tony apparently watching himself sitting at the diner table.

Along with several characters that looked similar to people in Tony's past it was almost like something out of the Twilight Zone.

Or it can mean nothing at all.

There were quite a few Twilight Zone referneces throughout the series, weren't there?

Yep I don't remember which episode but it did feature a scene from the old black and white series. I don't think Chase was being incidental here. And the Twilight Zone always ended with a twist always tragic.

And the Kennedy and Lincoln references peppered throughout the series cannot be purely incidental either, especially in the penultimate scene where Junior talks about "Bobby" and the Ambassador Hotel.

I tend to think the rings could be incidental but maybe Chase was mindful of its potential symbolism.

Was Meadow formally engaged to Patrick Parisi? In the scene where the families gathered was she wearing an engagement ring?

I just watched both scenes again - the Parisis @ the Sopranos and Meadow parking outside Holsten's.

It appears she is wearing an engagement ring or a band on her left hand in both scenes.
