I liked the way AJ said he felt "cleansed" when his jeep blew up. He said he was referring to America's dependence on oil but you have to remember that it was Tony who bought him that vehicle back in season 4(?). It somehow represented AJ being tied to Tony and the family.
After the car blew up he announced his intention of going into the army and really getting on with his life, finally mentally freed from the contraints and pull of his overbearing parents. But then, as always, they convinced him to stay by buying him a BMW and getting him a job in the movies.
"Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in" indeed. We leave Anthony Junior, resigned to a life of spoilt brattery and see that he will never really grow up.
I thought that was nicely done. Anyone agree, disagree? Thoughts?

man aj used everything to get what he wanted. i got the feeling that aj used the depression thing to get what he wanted out of his parents because what he was doing was not working at all. his dad taught him how to manipulate people. maybe im wrong tho :icon_mrgreen:

If that's the case I think he got it from Carmella, she's the manipulating one.
Anyway it was kinda stupid how they all of a sudden afforded that car, couple of episodes ago T was so broke he started bashing Carmella for his bad gambling streak. Meadow had an expensive ass vechile as well

I thought this was entirely appropriate. Like Carmella, who is bought off with cars, jewelry and furs, AJ is bought off by just threatening to join the army. His parents go from "you're not getting another car" to a brand new M3 in the blink of an eye.

You know, throughout the episode, I kept thinking AJ would die but not because he tried to kill himself. Rather because his stupidity would cause such. I thought they might not notice until it was too late. :icon_rolleyes:

It shows me that AJ will always be a slave to his parents will and will never really grow as a person.

I don't believe for one minute that A.J. would enlist. OCS? He would've flunked out faster than he could say "Officer and a Gentleman." Carmella wouldn't have been able to send him off with her Veil Parm to help with his fragile "blood chemistry." Nice parenting skills on display from "no new car" to a BMW.

I think that was him seperating from materialism. At Bobby's funeral he talked about how the American Dream was founded on greed.
Then his parents pulled him out of his righteous state and threw him back into a pile of money.

I also want to add when Tony was in the hospital in 6a AJ sat with Tony and talked with him. All he could talk about was cars and how he needed a new one. I remember thinking how shallow he was. During this conversation he mentioned how he wanted a Salen Mustang or an M3 BMW. THAT WAS AN M3 BMW. Not just any Beamer the exact one he asked for. Great authanticity by Chase.

Remember in "The Second Coming" when Carmela accused Tony of using the depression card on her (during their kitchen fight after AJ attempted suicide)? Looks like AJ learned too damn well from the master because, unlike Tony, AJ got away with using the depression card with Carm (and Tony) to the tune of a new cushy job and a BMW.

Not getting too far off track but does anyone know if that's really true about SUV catalytic converters and dry vegetation? I've never heard that before. So many people take their SUVs into the woods for camping or whatever. It seems like the whole country would have burned down years ago if it were true.

Avid lurker, infrequent poster.
I actually took something a bit different from AJ's reaction to the fire. Like Tony with the first failed attempt on his life, it seemed that the near death experience was the catalyst that brought AJ out of his depression. I think that it also showed that AJ is becoming his father, albeit a weaker version.

I realized that he was turning into Tony also, expecially when he said "Aways with the drama' top carmella.

When AJ came down in that robe and made the "always with the drama" comment it very much reminded me of him father.

Ahaha! good somebody mentioned this! I loved how Chase showed it. First AJ blubbers something about polluting SUV and oil dependancy and next minute driving that powerfull, high reving M3 which is probably not lesser polluter and gas guzzler than his SUV was. I especially loved how camera focused on that M3 bage to make a point, while car was going away with those high revs. What a total jackass!
