thats not the 1st time we've heard about grilled cheese on the radiator. Tonys cousin Tony B, mentioned he knew a rasta who use to do it in the joint as well . i always wondered why he pointed that out to tony one day when they were eating nachos, it just didn't seem that unusual. Now that Phil mentions it though, does it have meaning? of course i could have just answered my own question, it's not the unusual. this being the sopranos though i have to ask.

It may have something to do with the color orange...

maybe.

In both instances I think it was used to guilt Tony to a degree. In the Tony B. conversation, Tony S. is reeling from his revelation with Melfi about not doing the job with Tony B. And this furthered Tony's guilt, that the closest thing Tony B. had to a grill (they were using the BBQ) in prison was a radiator.

Phil uses the same example to make the point to Tony regarding compromises. In retrospect, I am not sure if either character is TRYING to guilt Tony, but Tony absorbs these comments to an extent, allowing both Tony B. and Phil to get their points across. I am not sure if the writers are using this example for any other reason then that, except maybe the radiator reference reminds Tony of his cousin, and strikes a chord with Tony, allowing Phil to get what he wants (which is exactly what happens).

I think it is just what they do, or did, inside. The follow up is what I thought was the hic-cup - where he said he wanted sex with a woman, and he compromised....by jacking off. But the pregnant pause made you think he got himself a punk, which has been Phil's slam for a while.

Not to mention that immediately after making this comment, Phil inserts a large cigar in his mouth. I didn't find that all too subtle. . .

The grilled cheese on the radiator, I found to be just a good example of recalling small details from past episodes to add to the feeling of reality. No particular meaning beyond that, but good writing nonetheless. "Verisimilitude", I think it's called. :icon_wink:

Phil wanted to stick it to Tony that he suffered for over 20 years doing hard time in jail, something Tony never done, and is owed some heavy payback not just in money but also respect. That included his insistance of 25% cut on the asbestos work. Phil is a very angry and dangerous man right now. I also think he is also going a little crazy as well.

I figured after that statement, Phil's punk was a guy named "Tissue." :icon_biggrin:

i wonder if there was any chance tony b was his punk? either way ,remember, he gets a pass.

To me it's clear that "grilled cheese on radiator" is a euphemism for having to live in prison deprived of even the most basic needs (like a hot plate to cook one's meals).

I came to believe that Phil back in prison did take part in some homosexual acts one way or the other. He just took the big cigar in his mouth right after his I "j..ed off into a tissue" speech just like Vito chomped on the sausage when we already knew his orientation...

I thought the same thing as he was giving that speech in front of his boys. Jacking off into the tissue didn't seem like a compromise to me. That whole speech seemed out of place. If I were Tony, I would have given him something back like - "That's what you get for making a mistake and getting caught, convicted and thrown in jail. You didn't compromise, you had no f'ing choice."

Well, sure. There is always some rape.

Truth be told, it is highly doubtful that cons would be making grilled cheese on a radiator in either a state or fed prison in the last twenty years. And rape is not as common as is often portrayed. Jerking off is of course. So Phil remains a pretty entertaining character right now.
